When watching the movie I saw how people from different cultures parent there kids. I dont think one parent skills was better then the other, i just thought they was different based on the amount of thing they had and were the were living. By saying this i mean the was a kid of one culture who play with rocks and his brothers and was happy doing so and on the other hand there was a kid who had toys and was alone and he had a good time. The movie also showed that some parents make there kids more independent then others. At the age of one of the babies was feeding himself and everything but the was still a baby bresting off of there mom. Some baby need there moms more then others.

I think none of kids would be able to change cultures because they were all so different. On many different leveals and i think that if you was to put them in a different place they would be unable to fit in becsause they would need more or less attention frome the families. something that they had in common was that they all shared equal love for the childern, the all did things that the thought the childern needed. They all looked out for the safty of they chrildern. I feel the movie shows that there are different ways to be a mother but at the end of the day there is no better love then a mothers love .

By looking at the results I noticed that a lot of what I thought people would say was wrong. The question that said something like " do you talk to your family about your personal life? more people said yes the do, when i thought the answer would be no. i thought the answer would be no because, even though my mom and i have a very close relationship i hear a lot of my peers talk but disliking their families. A pattern i noticed was that most of the answer for relationships with friends was positive answers, I think this is because people get to pick who they are friends with or not. With family the answers was a mix of positives and negatives because are born into there families. I feel that i am similar to most students base on the answers to the question. I think is because we are all teenagers growing up in the same city so our out looks on thing well be similar but how we go about doing things well be different because we all have different mind frames and we all had different experiment in out life.

I think this unit will be the best one by far. I belive this is true because everyday people interact with each other, on the train, in the hall ways any were you go someone else will be there. while talking about school during this school unit, i have thought about thing that i never did before. I never thought i would have to talk about school, because it was something that i just had to do and have been doing for so long. As well as something i hated. I'm not going to say by doing this unit i hate school any less, because it still wakes me up out of bed every morning, I still have to sit in long class that i don't think will help me after i'm done with high school, it still seem at times like a big wast of time but i have to say it was pretty cool to be able to talk, gain better understanting, and here what other peolpe around me thought about school. At first i thought it was crazy that we was doing a unit on school but now i kind of happy we did because this was one of the only times that we learned about soming that we have do every day, so we weren't learning aout someone else exprience, we were learning about our own and it was something we all can relate to being that we all go to school together . In the past black and white could not be in the same school, just like they couldn't do a lot of other things together. Blacks were giving very little rights and were kept as far as the could be kept from the white students. They were also given used books and every thing else they need for school. Everything was giving to the white students first. They were tought with there being many grads of students stuck in one room to learn . They question i have is how can some a 9th grad learn everything she need to learn when learn in the same room as an 3rd grader? The answer is that it can not happen, thats why black were unable to learn the best they can and get equal learing exprieance as a white kid . Blacks were held back . I learned deeply about this by reading a book called freedom children, this book wasn't only about blacks not having equal rights in school it was about blacks not have equal rights at all . There was stories from people who grow up during this time,and in some of the stories they talked about what they went through in school . From the being blacks were looked down on as less then or dumb to white people and that held them back.

I feel that blacks are still looked down on and held back when it comes to most things in life. A lot of balck men make it out of high school so they can better them self with an great futuer. Gatto- I read 6 lessons by Gatto, and i found that it was very interesting what he was saying about school. I felt Gatto was saying that as student we are kind of like robots. We come to school because we have to, we sit in a classroom under light and are just told information that we must remember to be able to pass the class. I agree with him because we go from class to class take notes and gain information then go to the next class with only a short amount of time to get there and do the same thing. If we want to do anything different like use the bathroom or get a drink of water we have to ask the teacher (or at lest let the teacher know) so the can be able to keep count of the students . we do the same thing over and over all year that we do it with out thinking about it. This is why people may view school as a wast of time, because the been doing the same thing for so long.

Freire - when reading Freire's second chapter of pedagogy of the oppressed, I learned that he pay attention to relationships between the teacher and the student. He said that the relationship includes the narrating subject being the teacher and the listening objects being the student. although this was the opening of the reading it made a lot of since to me because, when we go to school the teacher is there to stand up in front of the class and teach then the information they need to learn. It's the students job to listen while the teacher narrates . For the most part school works this way because if a teacher want's the students attention and they don't give it to them the are punished some way.

I'm not sure but i think Delpit was making the point that each student learn different from each other. I think she was saying that some student can be told something once and the will be able to get but on the other hand some students have to be told or showed something more then one time to get, so it far for them to be put in the same class? Are the smarter kid being held back? Are the slower kids being pushed to hard and aren't able to keep up ? I think that kids that are on different should be put together so they are giving equal chance and they are able to rely on each other for help.

In the class short movie, I played one of the girls in class that can't stop talking. When the teacher has his out burst in class, he walks over to the group of girls that won't stop talking and he let them no how he feel about them always talking in class. I doesn't say it in the nice way. This role, was a role that you see in a lot of movies about school, because i feel that in real life there is always a group of girls who play this role.

I think our movie showed how a teacher let their problem outside of work effect them at work. In our movie the teacher had just broke up with his girlfriend and he was taking it very hard, he stared drinking at work and didn't want to teach his class. The thing that mad our school movie different form was our movie didn't make the teacher seem like a big hero and he was saving the kids that every body gave up on . The teach was the one with the problem, but the kids didn't to be heros they just let him deal with his problems on his own . So in our there was no hero .

In our movie the whole class wasn't disrespectful, and all over the place like the student s we saw in almost all the moves we saw in class. Instead of making a movies that mad all the kids seem like problem children, in our movie the teacher had the problem. I feel our class movie was really different from the movies saw , nobody was trying to save anyone .

By watching the movies clips in class it seems students want to learn more when they feel the teacher is trying to connect to them, other then just teaching them about thing they feel they will never use. In all the movies we watch when the teacher stood in front of the class and was just trying to teach them they didn't even want to hear the teacher out but once the teacher tried to deeply connect to them thats when they gave the teacher a chance and had a lot of respect for the teacher and the students want to hear want the teacher was trying to teach.

The book I read was Freedom's Children by Ellen Levine, it was a book of stories by thirty black teenagers growing up during segregation. The setting of the book was in the south between the 1950's and the 1960's. The teens each told the their stories about what they went through during this time. The talked about the unfar things they went through just because the color of their skin. Some of the things they talked about was, sitting in front of the bus and not welling to give up their set, being some of the first to integrate public school's as well as eatting at all white restaurants. That was just to list a few of the things they did to get treated equal and get freedom. By fighting for their rights they were they face arest, violence and even death.

This book relates well with my topic because in some of the stories they talked about how the schooling for blacks was very unfar. They wanted to integrate school's so that blacks can have equal chances of success, al though when school did become integrated the still found ways to hold them back. This relates with my topic because i wanted to talk about is there equal right in schools now for blacks or are they still getting the short end of the stick.

In one of the stories by Fred Taylor, he talked about how he want to a segregated school and a white teacher. she asted him to make a speech but she wanted it to be," non-confrontational, with non- movement language in it. Just a nice high school speech". He was unable do so. meaning he wrote the speech and went over it many of time with his teacher but he was unable to go out and give a speech that he didn't really belive in. this relates to mu topic because i feel this teach was trying to hold Fred back from saying how he really felt . sometime school can better a person in school and out, at home a person might not get the push they need to do better,but when they attend shool they will get the push they need from friends and from the teachers. facts were bought upp that people say school can help people become skinner, or have higher aim for everything not just thing in school. I think this is because when you are in school you are always trying to keep up with other people. Part A ) I could not go back and do add to 41 because i changed my question, at first i was looking at how can a teacher student relationship impacted the the success of a student, because i saw how good i was doin in math class back in middle school when it seemed that the teaher really cared about the student, compared to now when it seem that the teacher does not care about you personaly and only there to do their job. Answer: Some pors are that you get to learn something you wouldn't learn in home by watching T.V or reading a book on you own, you get to learn about different thing and see understand different ways to thing about them. I wanted people  the  realize that  people  know  what  they are  doing  even though  they  won't  say  it, because  they  don't  want  to  be  seem  as they  bad  guy.

At first  I wanted  to make a  video  and  I had  a real  good idea  for  my  video.  It  just  so  happened  that  it  did not  work out  because  i  do not  know  how  to  edit a video. So I spent  a  lot  of  time  thinking  of  something  that can  be  just  as great  and also  have  a  lot  of meaning. I thought  about  doing  a  poem,  but i  wanted  to  do  a  poem  that had  a lot  of  meaning.  so I seat  at  home  and  thought about.  At  first nothing  was coming  to  me  but when  i  started to  do  something  else  and  stop  thing  so  hard  about  it  the first  few  lines  came  to  me , but  when  I want  to  put  it  on paper it  didn't  sound  as  good  has  it  did  in my  head,  but  the line  i  felt  really  good  about  was  "kill  to  be  cool".  I stayed  with  that  line  and  the  rest  of the poem  just  kind  of  worked its self out.

When people think of coolness, they may ask themselves how do I appear as cool to others. How would the rest of the world react to me, will I even appear as cool? I think appearance is a very important factor when it comes to being cool . Although cool can have many different meaning to different groups and people , a person that want to be viewed as cool will try to appear as cool to everyone . So people will do things such as dress to part, act how they feel people think they should, get body pricings as well as tattoos, take drugs and drink alcoholic barrages and participate in dear devil activities to be able to prove their coolness. Your idea of cool isn’t something you are born with, over time you people make up their own mean of cool from the things they are surround by. Things such as your house hold, were you living and the group or groups of people you surround yourself with. People take cool as a way to feel in control because everything around them is controlled , cool gives you the chance to make your own identity .

People often dress in the way they will like to be indentify . when a person want to come off the are “gangster” and make people think they are not once to be messed with, they will wear their jeans off their butt so they can sag. When a person want to come off as a person that has respect and will like to be respected they will wear their pants up on their butt. For example I know guys that wear their pant off their butt when they are going to school or hang out with their friends at the movies or a party, but when they go into a job interviews or a place where they are wearing dress paints they will wear their paints up on their butt with a belt to make sure they won’t fall down. The only thing to be identified by cool isn’t the way a person dresses, now of day’s the coolest person will have a tattoo. Tattoos are something that everybody wants if they don’t already have. It’s a way to express who you are by picture or words on your body. Most of the people that are look up to now of days have tattoos, rock stars, rappers, r and b singer as well as athletic , what makes them cool is the fact that they are always in the media . Mostly everything in the media is looked at as cool. I’m even a victim of think that tattoos can make a person seem cooler, it seems like lately every boy that I’m interested in has tattoos. At first it wasn’t something I didn’t looked for it just so happened but know one of my first question when I meet a guy is “do you have a tattoo or tattoos?” and if they say yes it seems like the biggest turn on. John fanning say’s “I got my first tattoo not trying to be cool I got it to be a rebel” because he grown up in a place where everyone was the same having your own identity was the hardest part”. People get tattoos of important moments in their lives good or bad, of thing that changed their life or of moments they don’t want to forget but when they look at the tattoo they will always remember the story behind it. R and B singer Riana got a tattoo of a gun after being beat by ex boyfriend Chris Brown; it was a moment in her life she would never forget so she “tatted it”. John Fanning also said “when I was in a punk rock band tattoos seem to be a part of the live", people get tattoo's get because they feel that is what they have to do to fit in to their group. I have noticed that a lot of football and basketball player as will has punk, rap, and R and B stars have tattoos, mean while a lot of models or actors do not have them. This show how people choose to identify them self it also show s that groups of people have different views on cool .

Self identity also have to do with were a person comes from and what they are surrounded by . If a person is surrounded by a lot of negative influences in most cases they will come out very negative . On the other hand if a person is surrounded by positive influences in most cases they will turn out to be more positive. For example every one think making a lot of money is cool, but If a person comes from a place where people do not work and they like to make money the fast way (selling drugs) . They will view that as cool and something they will like to do because they weren’t taught any better. A person that was surround by that way of live , will find skipping school then soon dropping out of school and starting to sell drugs to make money as the cooler way to live. On the other hand a person that is surround by people who want to college and after college found great job as a cool thing and they will want to walk in those people footsteps , because they will view that as the right way to do thing then that will come off as cool because at the end of the day they are making money. In class Andy was making great point s even though at first I felt a little offended , he said “ Most black men do not graduate from high school, the often end up going to jail or turn to selling drugs”. At first I was trying to find any way to be able to disagree with him and have strong arguments to back up what I want to say, because I’m black and I felt every time he made a statement like that every on in the class will look over to me and the one other black female in the class. I could not find any way to disagree with Andy , because what he was saying was true. He didn’t say all black were people because he knows like I know there some black people that graduated from high school and became very successful in college as well as in there cares. People get their views of cool form the people and things they see everyday .

People often act as charters out of a movie, always playing the role they are giving throughout real life. People may view this as fake when they see the person go from playing one role to playing the next when they are surround by different people. I feel this is where “cool” comes in. In one group they may need to you step up and became the leader , and within that group your identity is the leader , but when you hang out with a different group they may need you to be more laid back and let someone else be the leader . It don’t make you fake your just playing the role you was giving . During A class talk Andy mad a very good point , if a person is in a group were everyone is playing the bad boy role the person will play the bad boy role, to be seen as cool . Your identify with the role you are giving you pick the one you feel is the most you and you with it . People are often afraid to step out of their boxes and try playing a new role because they are afraid they won’t fit in. For example I been hang out with the same group of friends since the six grade because I know that I’m accepted in that group and we are all black . I know there are a few white girls in my class that I could be best friends with but I don’t try because I don’t know how they well react or if they well accept me. So I stay in the group I feel I fit into.

The point of my paper was to show how important identity is when it comes cool. It can be using it to find out your true identity or using cool to give you identity . Being cool is important to everyone although many like myself may try not to show it . Every one want to be looked at as cool by some body.

I think you paper was very good, i feel that you stated facts and got a little personal as well. you had images to prove your points , do i wasn't like you mad a statement with out backing it up and i thought that was a very good idea. I think you should add some of the info from class. you don't have to add every thing that andy said but you should add some. i think a good place to add is where you talked about tattoos you should talk about what fanning said when he came in to talk to use. So you can have what you know that fact you got from other place then what some who has many tattoos had to say I think it would back up your point to the fullest but over all great paper and think think there are very little changes that need to be made.

I think your paper was off to a very good start. It helped me out a lot, with understanding what my paper should look like so thank you. The only thing i think you should do is make your paper a little more personal like Andy told use in class. you should had what cool ,means to you and how the topic of cool you talked about in your paper is important to you its a very small thing but i think it would make your paper more enjoyable to read because it would not be fact after fact. I'm not saying you have to get to personal but just enough to make your reader want to get through your whole paper but other then that i think your off to a great start.

What it cool? Is cool the group of people we hang out with. Is it the way we dress and who name is on our shirts, is it the type of music we listen to and the videos we watch. What is cool? In class we spent talking about cool, what is cool? Where do the ideas come from? Why do people try to be cool? What makes a person cool? Most of the questions couldn’t be answered using facts but the unit did give me a better understanding of the word and what it means to different people. One big thing I learned throughout this unit the word cool have so many different meanings, I did interviews with family members, friends in and out of school as well as strangers about what cool means to them and each answer was different. I have learned that cool is a state of mind and can mean different things to different groups and people.
People often do thing so that they well come off as “cool” to others. They will act or talk in away to make people think they are cool. Another way people often come off as cool to others is by getting a tattoo , body art. Now of days tattoos are something that everybody wants if they don’t already have them. It’s a way to s express who you are by picture or words on your body. Most of the people look up to now of days have tattoos, rock stars, rappers, r and b singer as well as athletic and most thing that are in the media is looked at as cool. John fanning say’s “ I got my first tattoo not trying to be cool I got it to be a rebel” because he grown up in a place where everyone was the same and not in to tattoos and rock music. People get tattoos of important moments in their lives good or bad , of thing that changed their life or of moments they don’t want to forget but when they look at the tattoo they will always remember the story behind it. R and B singer Rihanna got a tattoo of a gun after being beat by ex boyfriend Chris Brown, it was a moment in her life she would never forget so she “tatted it”. John Fanning also said “when I was in a punk rock band tattoos seem to be a part of the live", people get tattoo's get because they feel that is what the have to do to fit in to their group . I have noticed that a lot of football and basketball player as will has punk, rap, and R and B stars have tattoos, mean while a lot of models or actors do not have them. This show’s that different groups of people have different ideas of cool .

Often times people put on a show for the people they are around. Although i dont think there is one way to inturputed the word cool people will make up there own meaning for the word and everyone in there group will live by that meaning. So they act the way they think they have to, to fit in. This does not make a person fake at all this just mean that they are playing the role that were giving . In some case this can limite the thing they can do in life giving the group they are hang out with and what their meaning of cool maybe, but if they dont get to rapped up in trying to be cool i belive that they can have great success because they know how to play their role.

In some case trying to be "cool " can hurt you. You may get rapped up in a group that isn't good for you. Many people think black people often get rapped up in the wrong groups because they are the once that sell durg, playing dice, skiping school or goin to school and not doing well. I feel white groups are so fast to look down on black groups. When they are the onebuying the duges that the black peopl are selling. As a black teenager that lived both in harlem and mid town i can say i have never know a person addicted to cocain that was 16 teen years of age or under intill i moved to midtown and started going to school at school of the future were most of the students are white. Yet black groups are looked down on.

I feel you make up your own meaning of cool basied on what you grown up around. Some may call this the path you follow. You see whats around you. Like whats goes on in your household, on the block you live on and what goes on in school. You see every thing thats in your path. You learn from it and you put different things together and you are able to make your own path. some times people follow the path that they are giving and often end up unhappy and in bad groups. I feel cool is what you make it.

I feel people get tattoos for many different reasons. They use tattoo's to tell people who dont know them who they are, or they get tattoo so they can have a moment or a person with them for ever. That is just two of the many rasons people get tattoos. Now of days people get tatoos because that seems to be the cool thing to do. talking to my mom I asked her , witch one she used. She told me that she didnt think she was missing any thing big , like a father or a mother because growing up she had both living with her and her brother. She said but she did feel that her emptiness came form trying to keep up with or be ahead of all her peers when she was a teen growing up in harlem in the 1980's. " when i was growing thats when the hip hop movement started , so you had to know the words tothis one song, you had to have this one name brand on your sweatsuit, or your hair done this one way. It was so many standers you had to meet living in harlem in the '80's ". she tells me she was happy that her family had the money to keep her up to all the standers but she felt that some times she wanted to be different from the rest , she wanted to listen to a song that every one didnt know , she wanted to wear a different brand of sweatsuit, she want to change the way she wore her hair, but she didnt because she thought that othere people wouldn't understand, she say " they wouldn't like change and i cared to much about what other people thought when i was a teen, and thats wear i think my emptiness came from". So she just covered up her emptiness by doing what every one was doing and being really good at it .
